In the year 2002, the Netherlands was one of the first countries to start with the monitoring of beach litter. This report provides an annual update of Dutch beach litter monitoring data and analysis results for the periods 2022-2024 (status analysis) and 2019-2024 (trend analysis), respectively. The statistical analysis was conducted in-line with the updated OSPAR CEMP (2025) guidelines and using the litteR software. The methods for beach litter monitoring and the results are no longer combined in one report since the 2023 update, but presented in two separate reports. This report is part I: Status and Trends.
Beach litter monitoring started as a programme commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) in 2002. From 2000 till 2007 beach litter monitoring was part of a pilot project in 9 EU countries, it then transferred into a regular OSPAR monitoring programme.
From 2023 onwards, RWS's information needs and the beach litter monitoring results, for easy reading by a broader public, are described in the annual report part l: Status and Trends (Maas & Hougee, 2025). This report, the applied methods report, is designed for the specialistic reader. It provides an overview of all deviations and changes that have occurred in the applied methods (such as the software, survey sites) from the start of the beach litter monitoring programme to the last monitoring year.
