This study evaluated whether gut depuration influences measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) used in the Dutch national Active Biomonitoring (ABM) programme. The working hypothesis, based on Vries et al. (2024), was that undigested particulate matter in the digestive tract may contribute to measured PAH body burdens and that depurated mussels would therefore exhibit lower concentrations.
