Effect of fillers on mastic behaviour

In Suriname only baghouse dust is used as filler for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Sometimes it can happen that during the production of HMA, due to the availability of baghouse dust, other fine material has to be added to meet the requirements for grading. In that case mostly cement is added to compensate the shortage of baghouse dust. Due to the higher density of cement, the volumetric mix composition is changed. Also cement stiffens the mastic more than normal fillers. These facts might result in premature damage of the realised pavement such as bleeding, permanent deformation or cracks. These problems can be avoided by using a filler of constant quality. In this research work different potential fillers are investigated, which can possibly be applied in Suriname as filler. First these fillers were characterised by the conventional filler tests and finally DSR measurements were carried out on mastics with different filler/bitumen (f/b) ratios. In this paper the results of the filler characterisation and DSR measurements on mastics will be discussed.
