Development of a slide rule for fate assessment of gases and fast evaporating liquids
Due to the still increasing transport of large quantities of chemicals at sea, the risk of accidents is growing. Chemical contamination can be hazardous to human life and/or the aquatic environment. In order to take appropriate action in case of spilled chemicals it is necessary to select the right response method. This selection is highly dependent on the local circumstances and behaviour of chemicals at sea is of great importance. Because of the enormous diversity of chemicals, this report first classifies all chemicals into four main categories: evaporators, floaters, sinkers and dissolvers. Deals with are evaporators and discusses the various models that are used to predict the behaviour of gasclouds. These models are simplified to be able to develop a slide rule; a small size, easy usable field tool.
