A design method for an intermodal road and rail inland terminal network
Two main research objectives were distinguished in the TERRMINALS study (focused on the terminals at which transshipment between road vehicles and trains take place). The first research objective is to determine the interrelationship between terminal locations, numbers of terminals, shuttle train length and system performance, taking into account two central basic assumptions. The second research objective is to determine which future technical logistic innovations in road, rail and inland shipping transport will take place and in which way the strong market positions and innovations of inland shipping and road modes in the Netherlands handicap in the rail in a strong growth of intermodel rail transport.
