North Sea estuaries as filters for contaminants
This report deals with the filtering capacity of North Sea estuaries for contaminants. The filtering capacity of an estuary is a measure for the removal of contaminants during their transport through the estuary to the sea. A simple generic method is developed in order to quantify the filtering capacity of twelve estuaries for 37 contaminants. The assessment is based on the retention of fluvial suspended matter within the estuaries, estuarine residence time, and characteristic physico-chemical properties of studied compounds.
