Sand-bypassing model for the Ameland inlet, The Netherlands
Presents a sand-bypassing model for the cyclic morphological development of the Ameland inlet in the Dutch Wadden Sea. The model is bases on a modified equilibrium-volume approach that allows the outer delta to erode and accrete about its long-term equilibrium state. Analysis of the inlet bathymetry from 1926 to 1989 provides the volumes for the input. The model correctly describes the cyclic morphological development of the inlet system as well as the rapid recovery of the attachment bar in the outer delta from the sand mining operations in 1979 and 1980. It provides a useful tool for preliminary design and alternative evaluation as well as testing of assumed transport pathways in inlet systems.
