Analysis of microplastics in Dutch marine sediments : update 2024
The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and the Oslo Paris convention (OSPAR) both require monitoring and data reporting of microplastic particles in Dutch marine sediments. Guidelines are specified by the EU MSFD monitoring guidelines and OSPAR monitoring guidelines). This information is also needed for national information on the status and trends of microplastic pollution for the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and other national partners.
This report describes the application of the methods developed by Cefas and Rijkswaterstaat for the analysis microplastics in Dutch marine sediments. Sampling of marine sediment (top layer of two cm) was performed by Rijkswaterstaat CIV in February 2024. At eight locations in the Dutch coastal zone and offshore, three samples were taken per location (total of 24 samples). The samples were extracted and microplastics were analyzed with µFTIR.
