The RIZA mission on the Aurul accident, Baia Mare, Romania
On Jan. 30, 2000 the collapse of the enclosure dam of the process water impoundment of the metal ore processing plant S.C. Aurul S.A. at Baia Mare, Romania, caused at least 100.000 m3 of water containing high concentrations of cyanide and heavy metals to flow into the small river Lapus. Hence the pollution proceeded through the river Somes (Szamos), the river Tisza (Hungary), and the Danube (Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukrain). RIZA sent two experts on a mission to Baia Mare. The activities of the mission consisted of meetings with public and water management authorities, inspection of the accident site and the rivers Lapus and Somes and the collection of water and sediment samples for chemical analysis.
