Fatigue lives of asphalt beams in 2 and 4 point dynamic bending tests based on a 'new' fatigue life definition using the "Dissipated Energy Concept" : phase II : DAB 0/8 : controlled displacement mode
The results are described of the comparison of fatigue lives for the dense graded asphalt concrete (DAB 0/8) in the controlled displacement (strain) mode. The fatigue lives were determined according to the common definition as the number of load repetitions at which the stiffness modulus had decreased to half its initial value and according to the new definition which is based on a change in the dissipated energy per cycle. The hypothesis is that this change indicated a change from the crack initiation process into a crack propagation process. It is still hoped that using the new definition the fatigue lives in the two and four point tests are exchangeable which will enable a harmonization of fatigue testing devices. By using an asphalt concrete mix with a small maximum grain size of 8 mm the ratio "minimum specimen size/maximum grain size" is above 3 which would eliminate the unwanted possible influence as a disturbing factor in the comparison.
