Monitoring Volga Akhtuba morphodynamics using Landsat images 1985-2001
Analysis of the morphological changes in the river Volga and Akhtuba over the past twenty years. Morphological changes such as bank erosion, sedimenation and meander movement are studied using satellite images. Furthermore, an analysis is to be made of the water flow directions during high water by interpreting differences in turbidity on high water satellite images. The study aims at a better understanding of the dynamics of a lowland river. Since there is some similarity between vegetation structure, morphology and processes of the Volga and of the Dutch rivers, this research could be used as a reference for river management in the Netherlands.
