Road safety policy in the Netherlands and the effect of the infrastructure on the succes of that policy
Dsicusses the long-term road safety plan of the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Public Works. Describes the philisophy underlying the Dutch approach to road safety. This is illustrated with examples of how the infrastructure can be adapted. Measures that are designed to influence speed are divided in three categories: measures to influence mentality; legal measures; and measures relating to the layout of the road and its surroundings (environmental and physical measures). Explains the approach of the problem in the Netherlands by measures, such as the BREV research project "Experiment in Residential Areas". Outlines the development of the woonerf, the dorpserf, the winkelerf, the 30 km/h zones and the 50 km/h arterial roads.
