Contains an overview of the state of the art of dredging polluted sediment as of April 1992, based on publicly available information. On the basis of this information an attempt is made to describe the methods and developments objectively and to assess their environmental effectiveness and potential applications. The report consists of 8 chapters. The first chapter is an introduction. Chapter 2 discusses the general terminology and principles behind environmentally effective dredging for sediment remediation. Chapter 3 describes the methods used by dredging contractors in The Netherlands. Chapter 4 covers the remediation of polluted sediment in other countries. Chapter 5 includes the assessment of the methods and techniques. Chapter 6 presents proposals for improvement and new developments which are assessed in chapter 7. The report is concluded by chapter 8 which contains conclusions and recommendations. The report is rounded off by a list of references, a list of dredging contractors and dredging plant manufacturers, arrangements of environmentally effective dredging methods and their potential applications and a sensitivity analysis undertaken with Lotus 1-2-3 (IV).
