Sea of substances : on the evaluation of ecotoxicological risk of substances in the marine environment while reducing emission according to best available technologies
In this study Dutch emissions of atrazine, lindane, mevinphos, diuron, copper, zinc, benz(a)pyrene and fluoranthene were calculated for 1990 as well for 2000 after implementation of Best Availaibe Technology (BAT) and Best Environmental Practice (BEP). By means of transport models immission in specific areas in the Dutch coastal zone was estimated and compared with (Dutch) assessment criteria. It is shown that for most of the investigated substances ecotoxicological risks decrease between 1990 and 2000, although further development of BAT and BEP is required to eliminate all risks along the Dutch coast.
