Protection of the corniche road in Salalah
Salalah, located in the south of the Sultanate of Oman, is one of the major holiday resorts of the country. Especially during the monsoon period from June to September many tourists visit Salalah. In 1985 a corniche road with a length of approximately 3 kilometers was constructed at the location of a former sand wall. The city has expanded which has resulted in buildings up to the corniche road. Since the construction, the corniche road and its protection have been damaged severely several times due to monsoon storms. Also overtopping of waves seems to cause problems. This report gives an analysis of the problem and is to make an inventory of the available boundary conditions. Furthermore, using the method of multi-criteria analysis, a long term solution for the Salalah corniche road is recommended. The designs given in this report are only preliminary and will have to be worked out in detail.
