NOAA satellites and water quality management of the North Sea : illustrated with 20 AVHRR images of 1988
The aim of this study is to advice the North Sea Directorate whether images of the NOAA-AVHRR satellites are useful in the water quality management of the North Sea. This report first discusses the characteristics of the NOAA-AVHRR satellites and its sensors, the major circulation, distribution of suspended matter and temperature of the North Sea, shipborne measurements, air surveillance data, meteorological data, discharge and model data and cloud cover. Secondly, an interpretation is made of images of total suspended matter and sea surface temperature. Finally, an evaluation is made of the usefulness of the NOAA-AVHRR system as a tool in supporting the management task of the North Sea Directorate.
