Room for the Rhine branches in the Netherlands : what the research has taught us

Summarising review of the lessons learned from, in particular river-oriented, research that has been conducted for the Room for the Rhine Branches project (RfR). The challenge of the RfR project is to devise and implement measures with which, despite a higher design discharge, a new round of dike raisings can be prevented. This concept is also considered in the 4th Memorandum of Water Management via the formulation of its principle of 'Room for the River: This means that measures to widen and deepen the river are being sought which can help in bringing about decreases in water levels.
