Feasibility study on AIS for the Netherlands sea area and harbour approach areas

As a result of decisions taken by IMO, ships from 300 Gt and larger will have carry the "Automatic Identifycation System" (AIS) from July 2002 onwards. The EU has proposed, as part of the Erika-2 proposal, a directive establishing a Community vessel traffic monitoring and information system for maritime traffic. Examines the possiblitities for an AIS coastal network to fulfil the requirements of the directive. Gives an overview of the state of the art of the introduction of AIS. Presents a basic solution for the required fuctions. Discusses the use of special messages, equipement and manning. Investigates further research to be done.
