Degradability, ecotoxicity and bio-accumulation : the determination of possible effects of chemicals and wastes on the aquatic environment
In 1972 the Convention for the prevention of marine pollution by dumping from ships and aircraft was signed in Oslo. In this convention a distinction was drawn between a black list of substances not to be dumped and a grey list of substances to be dumped only when a certain rules are observed. However, no detailed explanation of the terms toxicity and degradability was given, and there was no attention for bio-accumulation. This report is the result of research after tests to determine the toxicity, degradability and bio-accumulation of chlorine containing waste materials in the marine environment.
