Trial for the revised bathing water directive : bathing season 2000 : The Netherlands

The Bathing Water Directive 76/160/EEC (1975) is currently under revision. For the bathing season 2000, the European Commission has initiated a (voluntary) trial in some Member States to validate new indicators and to place current and new standards in historical perspective. According to the European Commission, the proposal for a new Bathing Water Directive will differ from the current directive (76/160/EEG) in two ways: -by shifting the emphasis from " purely punishing non-conformity" to " punishing inaction in response to non-conformity" ; -by introducing two new indicators of faecal pollution with new standards. This report outlines the results of the trial in the Netherlands. 12 Locations were studied: 2 coastal waters, 1 estuarine water and 9 fresh waters (rivers, confined waters and lakes). To get statistical valid results 20 samples were taken at each bathing site.
