  3. Subjective road categorization and speed choice

Subjective road categorization and speed choice

In the present study, two experiments were performed to investigate the subjective categorization of roads outside the built-up area, the effect of particular road characteristics on the driving speed, and the relationship between the subjective categorization and 'driving'speed'. The aim of the first experiment was to investigate how road users categorize roads outside the built-up area and how well this categorization maps onto the 'official' categorization. In the second experiment, the effect of particular road element (like emergency lane and side markings) on the driving speed was investigated. The relation between speed choice, road characteristics and subjective categorization is described, followed by a general discussion.
