Economic benefits of intermodal transport : examples from Europe
Examines the internal and external costs of intermodal transport. Looks at the main trends affecting the future of intermodal transport and describes policy scenarios. Each scenario features a specific structure of internal and external costs and framework conditions. Compares intermodal transport with road transport in terms of external and internal costs. Concludes that without an integrated road, rail and intermodal policy of targeted constraints, push and pull elements addressing the full social costs, intermodal transport will remain little more than a means of relieving the pressure on the rapidly growing lorry transport sector.
