Review and specification of inflow/OD prediction models
START stands for Simulation of Traffic for Application in Real-Time. The general objective of the START project is to develop a practical tool to predict traffic flows and travel times in real-time using the information provided by the On-line traffic monitoring system together with historic and network information. This report investigates and summarises the available literature on Origin-Destination (OD) matrix and inflow prediction, and reports on practical possibilities for their use in conjunction with the proposed statistical model. The report specifies the preferred method for use within the START model system to generate the predicted inflows given the real-time and historical data. It also outlines how these predictions can be used to generate predicted OD matrices. Included as an appendix is an article by Kalidas Ashok and Moshe Ben-Akiva: "Dynamic origin-destination matrix estimation for real-time traffic management systems".
