Effects of data collection methods in travel and activity research
Presented are the findings of a research project, which aimed at bringing together empirical evidence and experts' expertise about the potential effects of methods of data collection. The goal of this study is (1) to examine the relevant methodological literature on the effects of method of data collection in transportation and time use research and (2) to investigate how the results of this literature review relate to experts' opinions and experiences. The literature review in transportation and time use research is positioned in the wider context of methodological research on survey instruments. Special attention is given to the method of data collection (questionnaire vs. diary, face-to-face interview vs. telephone interview vs. mail questionnaire; computerised vs.non-computerised versions), non-coverage, non-response, response effects, costs and sampling issues.
