Observations and recommendations on consequences for Kazakhstan of the rise of the Caspian Sea : report of the mission from June 15-28, 1994

The Caspian Sea had, at the water level of 27 m-MSL (Mean Sea Level) in 1993, an area of 390.000 km2. It is bordered by Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. After a gradual drop, since 1977 the water level has risen with 2.0 m. There are prognoses of a future rise with 1.0 m. the rise of the water level causes substantial damage along the coasts. Within the framework of the intention Protocol for Technical Coöperation between the State Committe of Water Resources of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management of the Netherlands, a mission of specialists of the Netherlands visited Kazakhstan from June 15-28, 1994.
