Study on transportation demand management (TDM) and TDM-organizations in five locations (Boston, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco). Described are origin and development, and also factors affecting success or failure of TDM organisations, based on experiences at Commuter Transportation Services (CTS) in Los Angeles, RideArrangers in Denver, Seattle Metro, Caravan for Commuters in Boston, RIDES for Bay Area Commuters in San Francisco. Next is investigated the organization of carpooling (and vanpooling) by TDM organizations between the early seventies and today (e.g. marketing of the product "carpooling", incentives, cost/benefit analysis). Other discussed topics are: special arrangements for people visiting large scale events, infrastructure measures for TDM purposes (High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, public transport network, cycling facilities), alternatives for and supplementary measures on carpooling, supplied by TDM organizations (e.g. guaranteed ride home, student bus pass, parking management, working hours), build up of joint ventures for TDM.
