Petrographic examination
This report provides an outline of petrographic examination of coarse aggregate material, centred on durability assessment. Relevant information, intended for use when considering investigation of material from a certain source for the first time, is presented. Aspects related to petrographic examination which are discussed include: the petrographic classification (which purpose is to facilitate communication interchange and to convey some useful information about the rock), geotechnically relevant phenomena (such as materials known, or suspected to cause problems), the sampling of coarse aggregate, rip rap and armour stone for petrographic examination as well as methods for sampling. Other aspects dealt with are: sample preparation and macroscopic examination.
