Fulmar Litter Monitoring in the Netherlands – Update 2025
The aim of this project is to provide Dutch authorities with monitoring data of plastic ingestion by northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis), as required under OSPAR and EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The (undated) long term OSPAR target requires that no more than 10% of fulmars exceed a critical level of 0.1 gram of plastic in the stomach (Fulmar Threshold Value or Fulmar-TV), a level which would indicate ecological quality of the marine environment for marine debris. The criterion has been copied in the definition for Good Environmental Status under the MSFD. The monitoring provides internationally validated and agreed methods to offer clear conclusions on trends and levels of marine pollution. This report updates the Dutch fulmar monitoring data and includes data of plastics in northern fulmar stomach contents for the period 1979-2025.
