Spatial distribution patterns of meso- and macroplastics in the river IJssel

Plastic pollution in rivers is increasingly recognised as an environmental concern due to its impacts on ecosystems. Despite growing research efforts, knowledge of the spatial distribution of meso- and macroplastics within river systems remains limited. This study investigated the distribution of plastics in the IJssel, a major distributary of the Rhine in the Netherlands, as part of the De Rijn Verbindt project and the Rijkswaterstaat programme Plastic Free Rivers.

Plasticvervuiling in rivieren wordt steeds meer erkend als een milieuprobleem vanwege de negatieve effecten op ecosystemen. Ondanks de toenemende onderzoeksinspanningen is de kennis over de ruimtelijke verspreiding van meso- en macroplastics binnen riviersystemen nog beperkt. Deze studie onderzocht de verspreiding van plastics in de IJssel, een belangrijke tak van de Rijn in Nederland, als onderdeel van het project De Rijn Verbindt en het Rijkswaterstaatprogramma Plastic Free Rivers.
