Driver inattention : the feasibility of detection and prevention
The Dutch Ministery of Transport and Public Works (Transport Research Centre AVV) has initiated a project (Driver Inattention) whose explicit objective is to extend the developments for the European Union Transport Telematics SAVE (System for effective Assessment of the driver state and Vehicle control in Emergency situations) project. The SAVE project aims to develop an integrated system, capable of detecting a deteriorated driver state on the basis of nonobstrusive measures. Fatigue, the effects of (ab)use of alcohol and drugs, as well as driver inattention and breakdown are the relevant factors for the SAVE system. The inattention project is explicitly responsible for the inattention part in SAVE. This report consists of two subreports on two experiments: Driver inattention : a simulator experiment / D. de Waard, M. van der Hulst, K.A. Brookhuis ; Preventing drowsiness accidents by an alertness maintenance device / W.B. Verwey, D.M. Zaidel.
