Embankments along navigation canals and rivers usually require a protection against the erosive forces of currents and waves. Up to now, in most cases riprap, concrete blocks or sheet-pilings have been applied. However, the increased public awareness about more environment-frienly solutions has been leading to greater attention for design criteria for protective structures allowing the presence of vegetation.
