The potential for carpooling in the Netherlands : a first assessment
In the study, some first exercises were carried out in order to estimate the maximun potential carpool market using matrices from the Dutch National Model System(LMS). After an introduction chapter two considers the American experience to deal with the positive stimulation of ridesharing and considers to what extent some of the lessons learnt may be transferable to the Dutch context. Chapter three presents the present number of carpoolers in the Netherlands, possible measures to influence carpooling in this country and outlines the profile of the potential carpool commuter and successful HOV-lanes schemes. In chapter four the approach chosen to handle the carpool characteristics in the LMS is described. In chapter five, the results of this approach are presented. Chapter six, finally, gives the possible extensions of this research, and indicates possibilities to combine results of other studies with the finding of this project.
