Vision on international rail freight transport : VIRT 2010

International rail freight transport in Europe is not as successful as it could be: rail freight traffic is stagnant and rail market share is decreasing. The policy of the Dutch Ministry of Transport is to develop international rail freight transport. Therefore this Ministry took initiative to develop an internationally supported vision of a succesful future for European rail transport in 2010 and actions to realise this vision. In October 1996 an international group of stakeholders of rail freight transport participated in the workshop VIRT: Vision on International Rail Freight Transport organised by the Ministry of Transport. The group built a vision on successful rail freight transport in the year 2010 based on different scenarios.
