Infrastructure quality and freight flow scenarios
Discusses a new type of freight demand model, based on structural changes in economic relations that underlie developments in the demand for freight transport. The underlying ideas for SMILE (Strategic Model for Integrated Logistics and Evaluation) are presented as well as the data necessary and available to construct the basic structure and to develop scenarios based upon this structure. The applicability of this model for exploring the possible effects of major infrastructural improvements on logistic organisation of companies and through these on the corresponding freight flows, is discussed.
