A rational stability approach for tidal inlets, including analysis of the effect of wave action
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of wave exposure on the stability conditions of the cross-section of channels in the ebb tidal deltas. The hypothesis of equilibrium concentration, as proposed bij Di Silvio, has been used in combination with an appropiate sediment transport formulation. Analysis showed that an Engelund-Hansen's type of approach provided a reasonable basis for the given purpose. The analysis is applied to two major inlets on the Duch coast: Texel Inlet and Haringvliet Estuary, after closure. The results of the study show that the proposed method of evaluation is applicable for determining the stability profiles of tidal channels, in wave-protected areas as well as in ebb tidal deltas under the influence of wave action. It is found that the reults are sensitive to the value of some essential environmental parameters, such as median grain size and Chezy coefficient, which reduces the practical applicability to the findings in cases where this information is not abvailable. Futher studies are recommended on this issues.
