Extent and nature of environmental pollution from smaller installations not covered by EC-IPPC directive

An analysis of emission data to air, water and soil, generation of waste, consumption of energy and waters as well as information on accidental spills, demonstrated that various sectors of smaller installations contribute significantly to environmental pressure. However, of a significant fraction of smaller installations, the environmental relevance could not be demonstrated with the amount of information presently available. Emissions concern a range of dangerous substances with possible long-range effects and are often of a multi-media nature covering a diverse spectrum of environmental themes, such as eutrophication, dispersion of dangerous substances to soil, generation of waste and consumption of energy.
