IRMA-SPONGE : towards sustainable flood risk management in the Rhine and Meuse River basins
The IRMA SPONGE program deals with high-water events that can cause damage by inundating normally dry areas. The focus is on the extreme flood events along the middle and lower reaches of the Rhine and Meuse basins. Flood risk management deals with rare events, with a low probability. The major aim is not to present here a new flood risk management strategy, but helping to develop such a strategy. This report contains the executive summary reports that have been written for the IRMA-SPONGE project on flood risk management: - Development of methodologies for the analysis of the efficiency of flood reduction measures in the Rhine Basin on the basis of reference floods : Executive Summary (DEFLOOD) - Development of Flood Management Strategies - FRHYMAP - Interactive flood management and landscape planning in river systems : development of a decision support system an analysis of retention options along the lower Rhien river - Spatial planning and Supporting Instruments for preventive flood management - Guidelines for rehabilitation and management of floodplains - Cyclic floodplain rejuvenation - Intermeuse : the Meuse reconnected - Living with floods - Development and application of BIO-SAFE, a policy and legislation based model for the assessment of impacts of flood prevention measures on biodiversity in river basins - Extension of the flood forecasting model FloRIJN - STORM-Rhine : simulation tools for river management - Evaluation of floodplain management strategies: the added value of wetland rehabilitation : executive summary
