River engineering on the Rhine, experiences from upstream : Memphis, 22th of February 1990
The oldest interventions upstream of the delta have been executed in order to improve the conditions for the navigation on the Rhine. That's the reason for presenting two problematic situations from rich history of river engineering in the Rhine basin. These situations have occupied riverengineers during centuries. The problem areas are the Upper Rhine region and the mountainous reach of the middle course of the Rhine. In the first area river corrections and canalization works were undertaken; in the second area modification of the rocky river bed were executed.
