Preparing to meet the coastal challenges of the 21st century : conference report : World Coast Conference 1993 (WCC), Noordwijk The Netherlands, 1-5 November 1993
This conference report provides an synthesis of information (concepts, ideas and approaches) that was assembled at the WCC '93 and the prepatory workshops. Chapter 2 deals with the urgency of the need for, and the benefits of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). The problems being faced in coastal areas are described, and the results of 46 assessments of the vulnerability of coastal areas to sea level are analyzed. The environmental and economic benefits of implementing ICZM are also discussed. Chapter 3 describes the elements of ongoing ICZM programmes, and the obstacles that have been encountered in their design and implementation. Chapter 4 outlines the opportunities for building national and international ICZM capabilities. The appendices summarize the results of case studies and relevant programmes of international organizations
